This is a fun, hands-on chromatography activity for the holidays! Snowman patterns are used for chromatography of water-soluble markers using various solvents.
Students will trace a snowman pattern onto filter paper, such as coffee filters, place ink marks on the snowman, and perform a chromatography experiment using any or all of the following solvents: water, rubbing alcohol, acetone (nail polish remover).
Patterns and student instructions, materials list, data table, and follow-up questions are provided as a student hand-out.
Teacher suggestions and preparaton methods are also provided.
