Do you need a fun activity to use in your classroom during the dreary months of Winter? I did this in my classroom with my kids and they absolutely loved it all (and they did not realize they were doing work - I actually had a student tell me one of the days that we did this activity that we had not done any math for the day... I told him that yes we had it was just disguised in the lesson!).
What kind of fun can you expect for your classroom with this product?
~ Making Snowman Houses
The first set of pages shows you step by step directions on how to introduce
making snowman houses into your classroom. It discusses materials you will need
and how I implemented this in my classroom. It takes you through the MATH
lesson that I used to review 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional SHAPES, faces and
vertices. I wrote this on my white board, but have also included a page for you to
print out and provide to your kids.
Next I have more step by step instructions about how to make the snowman
houses. Once your students are done, I have included a page for your students
to record what they did to make the house. I have also included a page for your
students to draw a picture of their house.
~ Writing Pages
Once your students have finished their snowman houses and recording sheets,
they can record the process they used to make these with a NARRATIVE page.
There are two options for this - one that gives kids guidance with temporal words
to help with the steps. These second page does not give these words (for higher
level writers). There is also a page that simply has lines on it if you have students
who do not need a GRAPHIC ORGANIZER to organize their thinking or this can
be printed on the back side of the narrative pages for the kids who need more
space for their thoughts.
The next set of pages is for OPINION WRITING page for your students to explain
what they thought about their ENGINEERING project.
~ Learning How To Make Marshmallows
Next, I have a few pre-selected VIDEOS (can be found on You-Tube) to watch
about making marshmallows. After your children watch these videos, they can
answer questions to test their COMPREHENSION of the material they watched.
You can also discuss the videos and the duties of the people as they work in the
factories to make the marshmallows (jobs - SOCIAL STUDIES).
There is also an answer key for teachers for this portion of the packet.
~ Snowman Senses
This page encourages students to WRITE ADJECTIVES about their snowman
using their 5 senses (more SCIENCE).
~ Marshmallow Experiment
This encourages students to predict what they think will happen to their
marshmallow snowmen when they are introduced to new environments. Students
will also record what happens to the marshmallows after a certain amount of
time. Students will also be given the opportunity to list facts they learned about
the experiment. There is also a space provided for your students to write about
their opinion of the experiment.
~ Marshmallow Snowman Painting
The last set of pages includes a bit of MATH and ART in the same page... kids will
paint a snowman using marshmallows....
Thank you for checking out this product. I hope you find that it meets the needs of your students in your classroom.
