This STEM challenge combines two things children love: snowmen and animals! Students are challenged to create a freestanding "snowman" that includes food that can feed at least 3 different animals found out and about in the winter. It nicely compliments any study of animal needs, adaptations, and seasonal change. It uses materials that are most likely already in your classroom.

I use this activity during our unit on animals in winter. We learn about animal needs and how they meet these needs when winter comes. Students select an animal and write a mini report. During the research portion they come up with lots of additional ideas for foods that it would be safe to feed animals during the cold winter months.
