This is a fun math activity for the winter. I teach second grade honors but this could be adapted down for high first graders. It would also be a good review for third and fourth graders.
Students will count a collection of coins and then shop an "order catalog" to buy items for their snowman. They have to fill out an order form to make sure they haven't gone over budget and use subtraction to find out how much money they have left. Then they have to add 10 cents for tax and adjust their purchases if they do not have enough money to afford the tax. At the end of the activity there are reflection questions to integrate writing into the activity. There are also pages of the items provided to print and cut so that students can assemble their snowmen.
We used this activity in the middle of our Money unit to review what we had learned so far and peak student interest. The kids were loving it and took their purchases very seriously!
**Also included, a portion of "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" rewritten for you to sing and introduce the activity! :)
