This activity is designed to practice low do, as well as Mi, So, La and basic rhythms (quarter note, quarter rest, eighth note pair).
I use this activity with 2nd grade. It includes a whole class activity, a group game, and an individual composition activity.
First, we learn the four-line snowman song. The students also play these on instruments.
Then, in small groups, the students must match the lyrics (bottom of the snowman), then the rhythms (middle) and the melody (head of snowman). Using the hats, they can put the snowmen in any order to create their own song. Groups can perform their song with singing, instruments, and creative movement.
Lastly, the students write their own lyrics - add the correct rhythms - then add the pitches on the staff. You can mount them on blue construction paper to create a cute craft to take home or use on a bulletin board.
