An anchor chart is included to collect evidence. At the end of the lesson, students will respond to the the following prompt independently: Using text evidence, explain how readers know the snowmen have a happy Christmas celebration. Several differentiated assessment options are included.

For the lesson, teacher resources include: teacher guide with skill rationale/teacher language, lesson plan with stopping points, text-dependent questions (and scaffolding questions for each), expected student responses, post-its to print questions and place in book for easy reference during the lesson.

Other student resources included: large, printable form of the essential question, student friendly objective, and questions to post for visual learners.

There are tons of extras and extensions to be used after the lesson for more fun and learning!

  • 5 colorful vocabulary cards and 4 blank cards
  • Student vocabulary graphic organizer to infer meaning of words and provide context clues
  • Vocabulary activity options and photographs representing each word
  • Students practice the strategy of visualizing. On the movie reel, students sketch the five most important events that helped them understand the story. Then, label their sketches with key words from the text.
  • Students sequence story events on post-its. This can be done independently or with partners. Just print one page of post-its per group. Students sort and stick on a sentence strip. Then, practice retelling the story in their own words.
  • For those who are ready, students retell the story through writing. They may use the boxes to sketch/label or plan their retelling with key words from the text. Then, students write their retelling on the lines.
  • Students make text-to-self connections by comparing and contrasting the snowmen’s Christmas party with their own holiday festivities. Students can sketch or write to complete the Venn Diagram.
  • Students read words from the story and match each with its rhyming pair.
  • Students read a short passage about the story. To demonstrate their reading comprehension, students cut and paste pictures into correct spots on the illustration.
  • Students play “Roll-a-Snowman” using a dice. Students will add parts to their blank snowman using the directions for each number on the dice. Two options are included (one is drawing only and another has lines for writing).
  • Students color the snowman coloring page.
  • Students decorate their own snowman. This would make a great mini-bulletin board for wintertime!
  • Students respond to and illustrate a variety of responses in a Snowmen at Christmas mini-book. There are eight quarter pages. If copied front to back, you will use 1 piece of paper per student. Just copy, cut, and staple!
