Why work on antonyms and synonyms?
Increasing a student's ability to use and understand antonyms and synonyms will help to improve their vocabulary knowledge.
If a student has a good vocabulary knowledge, they will have increased comprehension of the spoken and written word.
Students need to be able to have a good grasp of vocabulary before they can deeply comprehend text that they are reading.
This packet is common core aligned and has been developed for the 1st to 5th grade levels. There’s a large variety of simple to more complex worksheets and activities included.
CCSS.ELA‐Literacy.L.4.5c Demonstrate understanding of words by relating them to their opposites (antonyms) and to words with similar but not identical meanings (synonyms).
CCSS.ELA‐Literacy.L.7.5b Use the relationship between particular words (e.g., synonym/antonym, analogy) to better understand each of the words.
