This Project Based Learning Unit focuses on providing students with having a realistic and authentic experience of exploring social movements/change in United States history. Throughout the process students will be learning valuable skills such as, researching, organization, speaking and listening, and historical content. This is a great way to help students see the connections between history and the connection to the current social movements they are witnessing.

This unit puts the teacher in a facilitator role while students are participating in stations and then an independent project. This unit can be talk independently or as a supplement to a unit on the same topic allowing the teacher to add content they feel passionate about or believe would be a great addition. The authenticity and real world aspect of this PBL has worked very well in our classrooms and we hope it does the same for yours. Students liked having exposure to a variety of social movements, but having the ability to choose a topic they were passionate about as a culminating project. The station work provides the teacher with small groups to have meaningful conversations about serious topics and gives students the chance to practice their skills in a cooperative structure.
