The information contained in this brochure is geared towards South Carolina's third grade social studies standards.
This brochure focuses on the groups of people living in South Carolina prior to the Civil War. The following are discussed: Elite, Middle Class, Lower Class, Independent Farmers, Slaves, and Free African Americans. Inside the brochure, the students are asked to analyze a bar graph about South Carolina's population during this time period and answer a few questions. At the end of the brochure, the students will answer a few comprehension questions and compare/contrast two groups.
**Recently Added: I added a fun Venn Diagram for students to use when comparing and contrasting two social classes. :-) Each circle in the Venn Diagram becomes the head of a person from a different social class. Students will compare and contrast the two classes. Students can add faces and any details they choose to represent the people from each social class. In my example, I drew an elite plantation owner holding money and a middle class physician.
