Description
Practice social pragmatics and communication skills with a board game! The game includes 160 cards focused on real life social communication situations and phrases. The different cards allow kids to think before they speak, discuss what they'd do in different scenarios, decipher social cues, and say a phrase in different tones.
This game is great for students with social difficulties and those who need extra support learning social communication and language skills. Use this game to allow students to discuss conversations, social cues, how to think before we speak, and using language to communicate our needs. Some students who may benefit include kids with autism, ADHD, speech and language disorders, and other students in need.
How to Play
Students will roll a dice to advance on the board game. The color they land on will tell them what type of card to pick up. The cards include:
• Spin It and Say It! - Choose a card and spin the wheel. Say the phrase and discuss what it means.
• Think Before You Speak - Read each scenario. Discuss what you might be thinking and then what you might really say.
• What Should You Do? - Read the scenario and discuss what you might do to communicate well in that situation.
• Decipher the Social Cues - Identify the facial expressions or body language from the pictures and discuss what they tell you.
Encourage Making Positive Choices
As students discuss and answer the questions from the cards, they will learn to make more positive social choices in real life situations. It is recommended to have some peer role-models in small groups or partners to play this to allow for positive model responses along the way.
Note that both black/white and color options are included. Blank cards are also included to make your own cards, as needed.
