Social Contract theory is tough for students to understand. This activity is a fun easy to understand activity for both the teacher and the student.

FEEDBACK: "Strong"

This is a fun lesson where the students get to create their own rules to help create a bill of rights or social contract to show the importance of trying to work out a set of rules that everyone agrees on. This lesson takes approximately one class and is assuming that the teaching portion of this has already been done.

To start with I have students go through this on their own creating 3-5 additional laws for our classroom. Following that I have the students get in groups of 3 and try to decide the things that they should add to the list but they must be in agreeance. I also allow them to remove one thing from the list that I give them. From there we share out loud and try to create a class bill of rights or social contract that we can all agree on.

Each group must share out loud in front of the class their new rules and the ones they want to get rid of. I will have one student create a master list on the screen while the students are sharing. Students may ask questions and even offer up suggestions after the sharing has been done. The suggestion will only be taken or written down if the members in the group agree. We will then vote as a class for which ones will stay or go once we have our list. This will be done with a simple raise of the hands while the students' heads are down on their desks. Each student will get 2 votes for the rules they think are most important and the ones with the most votes get to stay on the list.
