The following is an activity in which students are instructed to apply their knowledge and understanding of Social Control to real life situations.
In this activity students are given 10 real life situations in which deviant behavior is being done. Students are asked to list what they would do (if anything) if they observe the act of deviance being performed.
At the end, based on their 10 answers, students are instructed to evaluate the effectiveness of external social control. From that last question, the teacher and class can have a great discussion about external vs. internal social control.
This is an activity in which most Sociology students enjoy and really get into and apply quite well. Had some great discussions in class based off their answers (1-10) and then their final question.
