This cognitive map assists students who give rote answers in conversation (typically 'yes') because more abstract and temporal questions like, "Did you go to the pool yesterday?", "Did you visit your Grandma last weekend?", or "Have you ever gone to a concert?" are difficult to visualize/conceptualize or recall.
I created this originally for a 21-year-old client with Down Syndrome who was answering "yes" to all questions like this (mainly as a rote answer due to comprehension, but honesty played a minor role at times). Guiding her through this visual helped her to accurately answer conversational "Did you...?"-style questions. It was important to practice by asking questions we knew the answers to. I asked that the client's mother emailed me what she did over the past weekend so I would know what to ask about. I started by contrasting those questions with outlandish ones like, "Did you go to the moon last weekend?" and then gradually incorporated more realistic questions.
This is ideal for any student or adult with social communication deficits related to autism spectrum disorder or intellectual disability.
