What educators are saying
I used the anchors chart and sort activities with my students. They loved identifying whether a situation was fair or not fair!
This is a great mini unit that goes with our school's virtues of the month. Lessons were clear enough to leave with a sub and then I picked back up when I returned.

Description
After several years in the classroom, I realized that my students needed instruction on HOW to be kind, respectful, and all the things I was asking them to be. I developed these units to support teachers in teaching and rewarding great character in the classroom! Building a classroom community is one of the most important things teachers can do and it greatly impacts our students academically! This unit on FAIRNESS is part of a year-long curriculum for teaching students how to have great character! However, this unit could also be used as a stand-alone resource for teaching all about fairness in the classroom. :)
This packet includes many activities and lessons to teach your students about being fair!
In this packet, you will find 4 detailed lesson plans on fairness, as well as additional printables and resources!
Lesson 1- What is Fairness?
Your students will discuss fairness and sort situations by fair and unfair. Then you will work together to create a class anchor chart on fairness.
Lesson 2- Does Fair Mean Equal?
Your students will discuss how fair does NOT mean the same thing...especially in the classroom! You'll use dogs of 3 different sizes to show how we all need different things in the classroom. Then you'll share a quote about fairness and discuss it. It's a great way to explain differentiation in the classroom as well! :)
Lesson 3- How Can We Show Fairness?
Your class will review fairness and then they will work with a partner to act out a scenario. Students will have to decide how to make the situation fair.
Lesson 4-How Can We Play Fair?
Your class will discuss playing fair and create an anchor chart with the 4 steps to playing fair: take turns, follow the same rules, share materials evenly, and work together to find a solution! :) Then your students will draw and write about being fair.
Each lesson plan has a detailed explanation of what the teacher should say and do. :)
This resource also includes:
-an original poem
-a parent letter about the unit and how to support their child at home
-Fair is Fun writing page
-What's Fair? writing page
-My Teacher writing page (students will explain how their teacher shows fairness in class)
-Sort it Out-Students will read situations and sort them by fair and NOT fair
I truly hope this unit makes it much easier for you to build character education into your day!
