Digital and Print Versions

Revised to include a digital version for Google Slides! Students can now type their responses into each page digitally.

Making social inferences is the act of observing a social situation and then using clues with background knowledge to figure out what is really happening. It includes understanding what people’s intentions are, how they are feeling, what they are thinking, and what is likely to happen next. All of these things happen so frequently around us all of the time. Average people make social inferences so frequently that we don’t even realize we are doing it. However, some kids and young adults require extra support in learning how to read those situations and decipher the clues.

How to Use Social Inferences with Pictures

First, introduce the picture. Discuss the picture in the group. A “Questions to Ask” sheet is also included, so that you know exactly which questions to help lead a social conversation about each picture. Then, have kids respond to the questions right on the worksheet by identifying the social inferences they can make.

Larger Version Included

A larger version is included to project for the class (as a PDF or on Google Slides). This makes class conversations easy! Afterwards, you can choose if you want your students to respond to the journal pages.

Social Inferencing Questions

Guided Questions Include:

  • What is happening in the picture?
  • How can you tell what is happening?
  • How does the person probably feel?
  • What might have happened right before
  • What might the person be thinking?
  • What clues help you figure the picture out?
  • What social rules or expectations are involved?
