I created this resource because I did not find many social justice oriented math resources for 8th grade math, I hope this resource is the basis for critical conversations in your classrooms.
This three day lesson series covers the Flint Water Crisis and the relationship between poverty and lead levels. Students practice examining large data sets (from the US census), the students will plot points on a scatter plot (showing the relationship between poverty and lead levels), students will then draw a trend line and use it to predict information.
This is a great supplementary, relevant resource for students to see how math can be used in the real world. These resources can also turn into a project
Included in this package are: 3 handouts, 3 power points (with videos), the excel sheet with original data used to create graphs (all of these can be edited - PDFs and word documents for handouts provided), and supplementary articles and resources.
