Description

Social Narrative for Using My 5 Point Scale - 5 Point Scales are a great tool for helping students translate abstract concepts like feelings into visual and more concrete behaviors. A suggested way to introduce the use of 5 Point Scales to students is to first present the ideas in a Social Narrative approach with visuals. Teachers may want to learn about Social Stories before trying to use 5 Point Scales. The tool being offered describes each level of feelings as well as what a student can do at each level to feel better personally as well as how others are likely to respond. This tool should be individualized with student input and teacher support. There can be various times during the school day that the teacher might ask a student to communicate where he or she is on the scale at that moment as well as what action might be taken. Some teachers introduce the concept to the whole class using student input and examples to fill in the blanks. Of course teachers should be careful to avoid using 5 Point Scales as a way of threatening punishments or expressing disapproval but more as a means of communicating and identifying feelings and plans of action to result in better outcomes.

5 Point Scale is a behavioral support designed to teach difficult social and emotional concepts such as self-regulation and perspective taking. 5 Point Scale is a visual tool used to break down these abstract concepts into concrete parts to assist an individual in learning to more easily identify one’s own emotional states and more effectively manage one’s behavioral responses.

This resource contains 5 Point Scale visual supports that were inspired by the work of acclaimed author Kari Dunn Buron, whose Incredible 5 Point Scale books and resources can be found at www.5pointscale.com and purchased through AAPC Publishing. We have had contact with Kari and are so appreciative to have received her blessing to produce TpT resources based upon concepts described in her products.

In addition, this resource contains social narratives, also known as Social Stories ™

that were inspired by the works of the acclaimed author and speaker Carol Gray whose books, videos, and other materials can be found at https://carolgraysocialstories.com/ and purchased through Future Horizons Publishing at https://www.fhautism.com/shop/the-new-social-story-book-revised-and-expanded-15th-anniversary-edition/.
