This activity is continually rated year after year (semester after semester) as one of my student's favorite activities of their time spent in Sociology.
For this activity students are asked to identify the reasons why social norms exist in society and identify what happens when a social norm is broken. To do this students are instructed to break a social norm in public and observe and record the results.
Students are asked to work in pairs. One student breaks the norm while the other observes and records reactions of others to the norm being broken.
Students are instructed to complete a 5 part reflection in a Social Research style. The parts of the required reflection are:
- Discussing the Topic and Norm
- Developing a Hypothesis
- Creating a Research Plan
- Collecting Data
- Stating Conclusions and Making Generalizations
Included in this package is the following:
- Explanation of Activity and Requirements Handout
- List of Social Norms and Aspects of Culture
- Graphic Organizer for the Reflection assignment
- Extensive Grading Rubric
This activity fits great in the Culture unit of study for Sociology.
