Every day in your classroom you have the opportunity to make a choice, with every student. You decide whether or not you'll add to the emotional scars they've accrued so far, or whether you'll work to turn those scars into a roadmap of resiliency.
Improving the emotional well-being of 20-30 students every year isn't exactly what you signed on for, I know, but intended or not, you do have the power to make a difference. Do you have the time and energy to make a difference? That is an entirely different matter.
Use this set of 25 mantra cards to easily integrate social/emotional learning into your everyday classroom discussions, with almost no planning. Why mantras? To give the students' common language, something to think about every day to improve their emotional health, and a goal to set for their self-talk.
They are based on the 5 Social Emotional competencies; Self Awareness, Self Management, Social Awareness, Relationship skills and Responsible Decision Making. There are 5 cards for each.
You can use them in many ways! For example, you can focus on one card a day, discuss and refer back to the mantra many times throughout the day. You can use one a week or one a month. You can choose which card you'll focus on, or the students can pick one out. You also might pick out a certain card to correlate to other lessons you are doing, a story you are reading or a social situation unfolding in the class. These could also be used as Literacy Centres, as a story starter or a journal topic.
Social situations forever come up throughout the school day, and these will help to start the important discussions that need to happen.
The previews show all 5 of each competency, and this download includes 50 files, front, and back of each card.
FREE with this download is a Teacher Resource Guide, with many ideas on how to use the mantras. Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I'll send to you pronto!
