Do you want to see faces light up, while strengthening social skills, and building your classroom community? Would you love to do all of that, while creating personalized keepsake certificates for your students to use as positive affirmations? This is the perfect activity for you!
This is by far one of my most favorite activities to build community and relationships in my classroom. While this makes an excellent end-of-the-year activity, it really can be used any time your students need a pick-me-up. This is an activity that my students get so excited about- and request to repeat! My students with challenging behaviors have participated with great success, too.
The idea is simple enough- students take turns receiving compliments- but the outcome is so powerful.
To make this activity more accessible, I have included:
*An activity guide, with tips and suggestions that I have found helpful after doing this activity numerous times
*Mini PowerPoint lesson that reviews compliments, gives a rationale for giving compliments, and reviews examples of compliments that are based on personality traits/strengths/talents (for the purpose of this lesson, I do not include compliments on appearances or material items).
*Handout for students to refer to with lists of compliments to choose from
*Compliment Certificate that can be personalized for each student (I usually type or write the name of each student, write down all of the compliments that were given to the student, and then present it to the student at the end). These certificates can even be given in lieu of a reward certificate at the end of the year- and what makes it unique is that is a gift from the entire class.
