Goal and Purpose
A thought-provoking short story to promote personal responsibility for thoughts, feelings, and behavior. The purpose of the exercise is to help small-group facilitators guide the discussion on defense mechanisms, ensuring that group participants have the opportunity to contribute, express thoughts, and reflect on the issues presented.
Presenting the Exercise
1. The group facilitator will read the first page (page 3) and the
last page (page 11) of Defense Mechanism aloud to a small
2. Invite as many volunteers as needed to individually read pages
4 through 10.
3. Once the entire story has been read aloud, review the Defense
Mechanisms list found on page 12 and then introduce the list
found on page 13.
4. Finally, use the questions in the guide to involve all
participants in a group discussion.
