Research tells us that in order to learn, students must be consistently exposed to concepts over time. The targeted information needs to surround the student and become a regular part of their routine, day after day. This is even more important for students with social learning challenges. The Help Cards are designed to be short, accessible teaching tools of essential social concepts.

Social Skills Help Cards compliment social narratives and social skills lessons by getting the crux of the concept in front of the student at various times throughout the day. Teachers and staff always know where the cards are, and can grab them whenever needed – before recess, before a lesson, before a social opportunity, during an activity, or any other time. The cards are designed to present information briefly and succinctly, taking no more than 30 seconds to review.

For example, you are about to bring your class to the Library and you know that Katie has been struggling with personal space. You grab the personal space help card and have Katie read it right before you leave, and you bring it along in case anyone needs the reminder while you are at the library.

The Help Card gives the students more information than a visual picture card, yet is shorter than a full social narrative.

To be sure, these are not to replace social narratives, but to reinforce the concepts by getting key information in front of the student at opportune times throughout the day. Social Skills Help Cards can be considered mini-social narratives. (More comprehensive social narratives have their place, and should be used to thoroughly cover concepts with students on a regular basis in conjunction with role plays, practice, and classroom lessons.)

The Help Cards intentionally use a simple layout and drawings that save on ink while appealing to students across a range of age, gender, and ethnicity. Quality presentation, readable fonts, and simple sentences are key for effective student use. Cut out, laminate, and keep in an easily accessible location to grab when needed.
