Product Description
Practice social skills and writing at the same time with these 50 unique social skills writing prompts. The prompts are separated into five sections: basic interactions, conversation, empathy, friendships, and dealing with conflicts. Each section has 10 writing prompts with pictures to guide the writing.

Many students require additional support and practice with social skills in order to maintain appropriate social behavior in their daily lives. Often, it is difficult to incorporate time to teach social skills. Because of other academic needs, sometimes there just is not enough time in the day to focus on teaching social skills. That is why teaching social skills through writing can be critical. Not only will you be teaching, discussing, and reinforcing necessary social skills for your students, but you are also targeting writing and narrative skills, too.

Two Sized Prompts
This product includes 2 different sized prompts: full pages with space for writing and smaller strip-sized prompts, which can be used to staple right into students' journals (and allows less printing).

How to Use Social Skills Writing Prompts
When introducing a prompt, the adult should read the prompt to the group (or have a volunteer read aloud). First, discuss the prompt. Identify what is happening and how to answer the questions in the prompt. This is a time when it is extremely helpful to have peer role models, as they will help provide strong answers for these social situations. After discussion, allow for students to journal their responses. For students who struggle with writing, they may use the Sentence Starters page to help them.

Provide time for students to share their responses in partners or small groups. This will allow a time for discussion, feedback, and a deeper understanding of the social situation. If students disagree on what should happen in a situation, allow time for further discussion and explanation. This is where a lot of the learning will come.

As an extension to this activity, have students write and create their own social skills writing prompts. You can have students swap their social skills prompts so that other students must answer theirs. Similarly, you can also use the templates to make your own individualized social skills prompts for students with specific needs.
