Social Skills, Social Stories, and Class Meetings:
Included in this zipped package are some simple, clear steps for solving problems that students may have challenges with, especially students struggling with social skills and decision making. I love using social stories for students to help them remember steps to solve a problem. I have adapted that concept into my social skills lessons – and have the kids create their own social stories. I have included a modifiable and PDF template for social stories, and many “rules” or “steps” to help students know what to do in specific situations. Here are the topics included:
Accepting consequences for my actions
Avoiding trouble with others
Apologizing (Student example too!)
Bringing materials to class
Dealing with embarrassment
Dealing with peer pressure
Knowing your feelings
Responding to persuasion
I like to have a class meeting with the students about the topic of focus for that week. We talk about what it means, give examples, role play (if the kids can handle it!), and review the steps to each situation. After that, students copy each step off of the Smartboard, and then draw their own picture for each step.
Also included are ideas and suggestions for class meetings to enhance social skills lessons.
Have fun! ~CLK
