PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Interpreting facial expressions and body language can be extremely difficult for many people. Students with autism spectrum disorders often have the most difficult time with these skills. Many of my students have a really hard time with this so that is how this unit came about. My kids may look at faces and body language but do not understand how they go with what is being spoken by the other person. They also had a lot of difficulty with knowing who is a nice person and who is not. I believe this factors in at recess especially when trying to navigate the social scene!

Simply print these pictures on card stock and place in sheet protectors. There is an index included with page numbers for your convenience. The 18 vocabulary cards at the end are easy to cut and use during group time to help define what things like compliments, lying, and negative attention mean.

When you begin this unit, show the student the picture card and see how he or she interprets the facial expression and body language of the person pictured. Take notes! It will be an interesting comparison to the actual scenario I have come up with on the question page!
Use the Observation card with them to point out the features of each person. I would even hang up the Observation card in the room so that they can refer to it as needed.
Read the scenario and ask the questions. You may need to discuss the 18 included vocabulary cards about Perspective, Point of View, etc. to help them grasp the concept.
