PECS Central – Social Stories

Welcome to PECS central! If you are new to PECS, welcome to this awesome world. If you are an experienced user, I am excited to create easier ways to bring these visuals to your classroom or home.

A social story is a script, explanation, or set of examples that can be shared with students that has to do with a particular topic. Usually this topic is a rule, routine, or situation that you want to explore with the students. Social stories are a great way for students with autism or other special needs to learn about what to do in a variety of situations.

This social story pack includes:

1) Puberty (Boys) - Changes that are happening

2) Puberty (Boys) - What to do with these changes

3) Puberty (Girls) - Changes that are happening

4) Puberty (Girls) - What to do with these changes

There are many social stories out there. In my years working with students with special needs who are 12 and up, I have found very little social stories that address the particular needs of this age group. The great thing about this age, is that students can read along with the group or teacher/parent. You can ask reflection, exploratory, or extension questions after an important point or paragraph. I usually have each student read a sentence or paragraph (if they’re able) and I will explain the paragraph a bit more before moving on.

The social stories come in 3 versions, with or without a border and without PECS. I find that students in this age group benefit more with role playing practice or discussion, rather than visual supports.

I have a variety of social stories available in the PECS Central store divided into volumes. If there is a topic that you’d like to suggest, I would be happy to come up with my version of a social story for it. I encourage you to connect via email (PECScentral@gmail.com) if you have any questions about how to address specific behaviours in the classroom or home. There is no magic answer to any issue, but seeking support and collaborating with others is usually a good start.
