Social Stories are a great teaching tool not only for students with special needs, but also for any child that needs a little help internalizing the many behavioral expectations that we throw their way in school.
The value of a social story is in the simplicity of the language and the corresponding visuals. You will notice that all of my social stories have blank boxes above the words. In these boxes either insert or affix a picture of the student modeling the behavior described in the words, or have them draw a picture to accompany the words. Both approaches will foster a sense of ownership and pride and will result in more time spent reading it.
This is a great social story that reminds students of strategies that they can use when they have a question--re-read the directions, look around to see what others are doing, quietly ask a friend, and finally raise your hand to let the teacher know you need help.
