Little BOOK format - Some students just can't get started on work without teacher support and encouragement. This social story solves this problem cooperatively…both sides give a little. The student completes a couple of tasks, then the teacher supports this effort by giving attention. This is a great start toward independence.

Use these materials as a behavioral intervention for a student who struggles to begin work independently.

Social stories are an entertaining format that children can relate to. These stories state the problem, why it's a problem, and what to do about it. Print and fold as many copies as you like of this Little Book (Folding instructions included). Send a copy home so parents can read it with their child and reinforce your efforts in school. If a copy is damaged, print another. Collect an assortment of these little social story books and allow your students to read the books whenever they like. Store copies in your break area (or time out area) so kids can look through the books independently.

SOCIAL STORY - Getting Started
This is an 8 page "Little Book" (3 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches) with color pictures to support the text. This book features a child who becomes upset when asked to start an assignment independently. Within the story is a three step strategy to overcome this problem.

POSTER
One color poster (print on 8 1/2 x 11 paper) is included. It supports the three step strategy for getting teacher help discussed in the social story.

COLORING "BOOK"
Print on 8 1/2 x 11' paper, fold in forths, and you get a little four page coloring book. This "book" reinforces the three step method of getting teacher attention.

DESKTOP CARDS
These cards are laid out so that they can be printed on card stock, then folded. They can stand up as a little two sided sign. Again, these restate the three step method for getting teacher attention. (print in color and/or in black & white)

CHECKLIST
Laminate a checklist to help students learn to follow a simple procedure when starting a new assignment. Hand them out when needed. Collect and use them again for another assignment.
