Social Stories are a great teaching tool not only for students with special needs, but also for any child that needs a little help internalizing the many behavioral expectations that we throw their way in school.
The value of a social story is in the simplicity of the language and the corresponding visuals. You will notice that all of my social stories have blank boxes above the words. In these boxes either insert or affix a picture of the student modeling the behavior described in the words, or have them draw a picture to accompany the words. Both approaches will foster a sense of ownership and pride and will result in more time spent reading it.
Indoor recess is a great social story for those individuals that struggle with the rules associated with the change in venue. It is also a great way to review classroom expectations for indoor recess with the entire class.
