Social Stories are a great teaching tool not only for students with special needs, but also for any child that needs a little help internalizing the many behavioral expectations that we throw their way in school.
The value of a social story is in the simplicity of the language and the corresponding visuals. You will notice that all of my social stories have blank boxes above the words. In these boxes either insert or affix a picture of the student modeling the behavior described in the words, or have them draw a picture to accompany the words. Both approaches will foster a sense of ownership and pride and will result in more time spent reading it.
Language of Friendship outlines the importance of using kind words with peers at school. It asks children to list the unkind words that they use and then the words that they can use to be a good friend--the language of friendship! This social story, coupled with my Daily Goal Setting Pack is perfect for curbing the unkind words that a child uses. Read the social story daily and then set a daily goal for "using the language of friendship" and watch them progress!
