Social Story → No Screaming!

Children who scream when upset seldom think of how their screams impact others. Without effective verbal skills, screaming serves their needs. This Little Book is a story that kids can relate to. It even comes in kid size! It can be a visual reminder for the child to try and talk through their problem. Once the child is calm, try reading him this story.

BOOKS:

No Screaming comes in four versions:

1. Little Book – This folds to 3½x4¼ inches – kid size! These books fit nicely in a pocket.

2. Bigger Book – These are half page size. Just a little bigger – uses two sheets of standard paper.

3. Full Page Book – Each page of the book is one full sheet of standard 8½x11 paper

4. Poster Story – The full text and illustrations are on one sheet of paper.

ADDITIONALLY, all four versions AND most of the supplemental materials come with four different main characters – a dark boy, dark girl, light boy, and light girl. This allows you to tailor the book to a specific child. This will help your target student relate better to the story.

PARENT VERSION – This version has a parent rather than a teacher supporting the child. (Parents might appreciate having this if the child screams at home.)

Print these social story books as many times as you like (Folding instructions for LITTLE BOOK included). Send a copy home so parents can read it with their child and reinforce your efforts in school. If a copy is damaged, print another.

Collect an assortment of these little social story books and allow your students to read the books whenever they like. Keep copies in your BREAK SPACE.

Create a Little Book Library

You can even LAMINATE the books so they will survive even the most challenging students! (See the FAQ included for hints on how to do this.)

SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS:

Hang the POSTERS. Hand out black&white posters as coloring sheets. Use the PUNCH CARDS to reinforce the child when s/he uses language instead of behaviors to communicate needs. Use the visual BREAK CARD to teach children to take some time to try and feel better. Set up a behavior plan using the TOKEN CHART as both an incentive AND as data collection. Send NOTES HOME to keep parents informed of the child’s success. Hand out PENCIL TOPPERS – just for fun. Use BADGES as rewards that kids can wear…or use the BADGE COLLECTION BOOK to encourage children to collect NO SCREAMING badges, or to collect a variety of badges as you study other social stories.
