What is a Social Story
A social story is a tool to use with individuals who are
displaying behaviors that you would like to modify. During the school day and at home, individuals with autism may have difficulty. These stories may help the student have an easier day and in turn your day will be easier.
This Social Story Set contains social stories regarding the following behaviors:
Hands in Pants
The social story should be read to the individual often or daily in order to modify the behavior. The language of the social story is written in a positive tone. There is a strong focus on feelings through the story and changes are discussed positively.
There are additional options provided that may be added to the social story in the boxes provided. You can use these to personalize the story. One option is to add to the story why they do the behavior. You can use the options provided or add your own. The other option you can add is a replacement behavior that the student may use. When eliminating a behavior the individual may need a replacement behavior to still meet their needs.
In addition, 3 sets of cards are provided to use in conjunction with the social story. These are cards that the nonverbal or less verbal individual can use to communicate and get their needs met. One set is black and white with large font, one set is colored and the final set is symbol based.
The social stories provided here are roughly 4”x6” in size. I find this size easy to cut and laminate and put on a ring to read whenever possible. This size is also convenient to use in a 4”x6” photo album. This is helpful if you don’t have access to lamination or the student responds best to a book format. Each social story is 6 pages in length – two 4”x6” pages per sheet of paper – which can be printed on 3 sheets of paper.
The Social Story Set: More Behaviors intervention tool will be an effective visual strategy to use with a variety of behaviors!
