A social story is a tool to use with individuals who are
displaying behaviors that you would like to modify.
This Social Story Set is for students who are hurting themselves (self-injurious behaviors). This set contains social stories regarding the following behaviors:
-Pulling Out My Hair
-Banging My Head
-Picking At My Skin
The social story should be read to the individual daily if possible. The language of the social story is written in a positive tone. There is a strong focus on feelings through the story and changes are discussed positively.
The yellow blanks within the stories can be filled with the options given on the last few pages of this document. Adding these pieces can make the social story more personal to the intended listener. We have included the most popular options in this area, but blank boxes are provided in case you need to write your own.
There are a set of communication cards that correspond to the options given in the yellow boxes. Use these if the individual needs communication support to meet their needs.
The social stories provided here are roughly 4”x6” in size. I find this size easy to cut and laminate and put on a ring to read whenever possible. This size is also convenient to use in a 4”x6” photo album.
The Social Story Set intervention tool will be an effective visual strategy to use with a variety of behaviors and individuals!!
