Social Stories are a great teaching tool not only for students with special needs, but also for any child that needs a little help internalizing the many behavioral expectations that we throw their way in school.
The value of a social story is in the simplicity of the language and the corresponding visuals. You will notice that all of my social stories have blank boxes above the words. In these boxes either insert or affix a picture of the student modeling the behavior described in the words, or have them draw a picture to accompany the words. Both approaches will foster a sense of ownership and pride and will result in more time spent reading it.
Summer vacation can be a scary time for many kids because they are losing the predictability that school provides. This social story helps to explore these feelings in addition to reminding students that they will be missed and that before they know it, they will be back at school surrounded by loving teachers and friends! This is a great activity for individual students that are showing an increase in anxiety as vacation nears or as a whole class, end of the year activity!
(NOT for kindergarten--a kindergarten version will be coming soon)
