Hitting, kicking, biting, and hair pulling are methods kids use when they feel helpless or frustrated because they can’t figure out how to get what they need or want. Many times when a child hits, kicks, bites, or pulls hair they are not trying to be mean. They are trying to get control of the situation. They want to feel powerful not helpless. In this unit, the P.O.W. superheroes teach kids that words have power to help them get what they need or want. P.O.W. = Power Of Words. The unit comes with 3 versions of the story, posters, reward/reinforcement coupons, behavior tracking charts, and award certificates.

Recommendations for using this unit:
Print and put in a sleeve protector. Keep in a 3 ring binder to reuse.
After reading the original version, guide the student through filling in the blanks to personalize a book with their own feelings. Talk them through drawing their own facial expressions. Spend time in front of a mirror practicing facial expressions. Come up with a strategy or code word that words for them.
give a stack of coupons to all of your student’s teachers and when your student is caught using words instead of negative actions, your student can turn in the coupons to you to receive their award certificate or your own incentive program.
use to reward students for achieving their goal and communicate growth to their family.
Classroom wall poster:
post somewhere visible to remind your student even when you are not around or print 4/page, laminate, and use as a desk card
use to track data on a weekly or daily basis to monitor improvement. Data can easily be used in an IEP for students with behavior intervention plans.
