Do you have a student who is struggling and resists help?
I wrote this story for a student with autism, who was falling behind and was too embarrassed to ask for or receive help. Rather than move the student in to a more restrictive environment I used a social story.
This story is an action plan for students who are struggling. This story gives the student control over how they respond to their teachers. Read this story frequently and discuss the various strategies for students as they struggle in the classroom.

This Lesson Is Helpful For:

Social Workers/Psychologists:
Use this story with students who are experiencing difficulty in class.
Special Educators:
Use this story with students on your caseload who engage in challenging behavior when they become overwhelmed in class.
Regular Education Teachers:
Use this story with students in your class who are display signs of anxiety and task avoidance in the classroom.

~I wrote this story a student who has autism and was served in the regular education setting with inclusion services. This students was very intelligent, but he has a low tolerance for frustration. I wanted my student to understand the power he has over his environment. My student learned how to communicate with his teachers and verbalize his moments of frustration. My student and I read this story several times and role played the strategies. The improvement in classroom behavior was immediate and the target behavior faded away in less than a month. If you have a student who gets very upset when frustrated, I hope this story can be helpful for them as well.
