This is an activity for teachers to use at the start of the year with middle school social studies students. It is a getting-to-know-you activity focused on geography and is aimed at helping the students connect with each other and geography at the beginning of the school year. I've used it with my grade 6s on the first day to get them talking about places and sharing experiences.
Print out a piece of paper for every students (or paste into OneNote as I do). Give them 5 or 10 minutes to walk around and find other students who fit the criteria. I always encourage them not to use the same students more than once (this depends on how big or small your class is). Students record the names and the information -I get them to do this so that we can share at the end and check information.
The students I teach are at an international school which is why there are so many questions about traveling and languages -this could easily be adapted to focus on your local area or be more relevant for your students.
