My name is Pamela Vizdos and this Social Studies lesson involves your students learning about the Battle of Gettysburg and creating a newspaper in their own words. The class will be broken up into groups creating a northern newspaper and a southern newspaper with articles, photographs, etc., all pertaining to the Battle of Gettysburg. I love the Civil War and this lesson plan will hopefully draw students in so that they can understand the how Gettysburg changed the Civil War. 2 lesson plans are provided as well as the following: a PowerPoint presentation with printed narrative for the teacher; general Gettysburg information regarding the battle to share with your students; a sample newspaper that I created called the Gettysburg Gazette; information about journalism; placing events in chronological order quiz and answer sheet; short answer questions and answer sheet; in-class essay and answer sheet; rubric for individual and group participation. Lesson: students will break into small groups for the newspaper staff, research the Battle of Gettysburg, design and layout their newspaper, develop their stories and topics, and present their newspaper to the class. Please let me know if you are unable to open the zip file and I will email all of the individual documents to you. I hope you enjoy the product! The scope and span of this lesson can be completely changed based on how long you want the lesson to last.
