Clear vocabulary and layout guides children through an introduction to Social Studies by teaching them how to read a map and use direction/motion words, and how to find the cardinal directions North, South, East, West on a compass.
Real life examples are given to allow the students to relate the material they are learning to real life situations.
Each page contains a different activity - discussions, writing, drawing, movement activities etc.
Page 1 - Introduction to maps and globes and a discussion activity.
Page 2 - Position words (left/right/up/down etc), clear visual explanations and written description activity.
Page 3 - Motion words (forwards.backwards etc), clear visual explanations and gap fill exercise.
Page 4 - Directions on a compass (cardinal and intermediate directions), sun rise, sun set, and movement activity.
Page 5 - Complete a compass activity.
Page 6 - Reading a map using a Map Key (legend) and symbols.
Page 7 - Design a new playground for the school by creating a map with a key.
Page 8 - Plenary Activity, review a real life map of a zoo and interpret it using skills gained in the unit.
This is a complete unit of work and can be used over several weeks.
