I designed these cards to be used in conjunction with my interactive social studies notebooks #1-4, but they could really be used with any non-fiction social studies passage. You don't have to use my passages to be able to use these. I did design them small, so they can be easily glued into an interactive social studies notebook, and then students complete the task right there in their notebook using the passage you have given them as a reference.

The idea behind them is to offer a way to integrate specific reading skills into the lesson you are already doing on social studies. Each card focuses on a reading skill. You would first read and discuss the passage from a social studies angle, and then you would come back and use one of the skill cards to either introduce or review a reading skill.

They are especially perfect for days when you are short on time and need to get a reading skill in but you also know you need to get those social studies topics covered.

For example, you might read a history passage on the Iranian Hostage Crisis and study it based on the social studies/history content. Then you pick a reading skill card to also incorporate into the lesson. For this lesson, I might choose the fact/opinion card. They would list five facts learned from the passage and also form an opinion. In this case, it might be " President Carter should not have let the Shah into the country for medical treatment."

The cards can be used over and over, and even more than one skill card could be selected for a passage. Using the passage above, I could have also chosen other cards. For example, I could have used the 'background' knowledge card to find out what students know about hostages. ..... there are many others I could have used, too.

If you already use my interactive notebooks, I think you are going to love them!
