The unit goals covered in this unit are:
*Identify the characteristics of a good citizen
*Identify ways to be a good citizen in the classroom
* Identify characteristics of good citizens including but not limited to justice, truthfulness, and equality
*Explain why a good citizen obeys rules and actively participates to make his community a better place to live
*Identify ways they can be good citizens in the community
*Identify and explain the significance of state symbols
* Identify and explain the significance of U.S. symbols
*Explain how selected customs and celebrations reflect an American love of individualism, inventiveness and freedom
*Explain how symbols, songs, anthems, and celebrations help establish a national identity including “The Star Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful”
*Explain how patriotic symbols, customs, and celebrations reflect the values of Americans

TEKS:
2.13A Identify characteristics of good citizenship including truthfulness, justice, equality, respect of oneself and others, responsibility in daily life and participation in government by education oneself about the issues, respectfully holding public officials to their word and voting
2.13C Identify other individuals who exemplify good citizenship
2.13D Identify ways to actively practice good citizenship including involvement in community service
2.1The student understands the historical significance of landmarks and celebrations in the community, state, and nation
2.1A Explain the significance of various community, state, and national celebrations
2.4C Explain how people and events have influenced local community history
2.14 The student identifies, customs, symbols, and celebrations that represent American beliefs and principals that contribute to our national identity
2.14A Recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States Flag and the Pledge to the Texas Flag
2.14B Identify selected patriotic songs including “The Star Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful”
2.14C Identify selected symbols such as state and national birds and flowers and patriotic symbols such as the US and Texas flags and Uncle Sam
2.14D Identify how selected customs, symbols, and celebrations reflect an American love of individualism, inventiveness, and freedom
