This is a Grade 8 STAAR Review Foldable that covers ALL Readiness Standards and some Supporting Standards in the first 3 units (Exploration/Colonization, American Revolution, and Constitution). It uses primary sources, graphics, maps, and graphic organizers to help students review, memorize, and think critically about the information they learned first semester.
Purpose: To prepare students for the social studies STAAR using the readiness TEKS to guide instruction.
Why Readiness TEKS?
If you access the Grade 8 Social Studies STAAR Blueprint from TEA, the Grade 8 Social Studies STAAR tests significantly more Readiness Standards than Supporting Standards. Because of this reason, this review focuses on ALL Readiness standards found in the 8th grade social studies TEKS, and a few supporting standards.
How does this review work?
I have organized the review in chronological order. Students are given review cards, each specifically reviewing a TEK. The PowerPoint that is sold with this product is for teachers to go through with the students for them to fill in each card to review material in a TEK driven way. Students will create a Review foldable shown in the images below, and cut and paste their review cards in order onto the index cards. A parent signature sheet can be added to the back if desired.
What strategies have you used to help students review for the STAAR test?
All throughout the review I have used best practice strategies and given students the ability to practice with the documents and maps they may see on the test. For example, students are given many different graphic organizers to fill out to help organize the information they have learned. Additionally, these graphics help with retention of information. I have also used quotes from the Declaration of Independence, Federalists Papers, and many different maps and pictures to get students to think critically about what they know and relate it to the stimulus given.
