My collection of vocabulary PowerPoints are formatted to provide teachers a simple and effective structure for teaching vocabulary explicitly by having students see it, say it, hear it, write it, and practice each word. Each slide has the term at the top, an academic definition in italics that follows, two teacher prompting questions, and one context question for students. Each slide also has a washed-out image related to the term behind the text.
To teach vocabulary using this format:
1. Teacher asks the first prompting question "What is [term]?"
2. Students read the academic definition in italics chorally
3. Teacher asks the second prompting question, which restates the definition in simpler language: "What do we call [simple definition]?"
4. Students then repeat the term (just the word) chorally
5. Teacher asks the context question while raising their hand to signal that this question should be answered individually (answers vary)
6. Teacher calls on several students to give their answer then provides time for students to write down the definition.
I ask them to write the simplified version, which is underlined within the second prompting question. For homework, students complete their "applications" for each word. Options include: draw a picture, identify a synonym, use the word in a sentence, or generate a short list of examples.
