Be sure to download the starter kit for the SSWC for free in my store! It is necessary to use this product to its full capacity.
This product is designed to complement, enhance, or enrich the lessons you are already teaching about European explorers and the Age of Exploration. Each of the five centers included here can stand alone from each other, but should not stand alone as the only source of instruction or information about this topic. Before you allow students to work in these stations, be sure you have established the routines outlined in the starter kit.
Read about it: This text is leveled to be used with on-level 5th graders. Scaffolding and other supports may be necessary for lower readers or language learners.
Write about it: You can choose for students to answer this prompt in a journal or on a separate piece of paper. There is a larger version of the prompt as well as smaller versions which can be glued into notebooks.
Fab Vocab: Students should have a basic knowledge about the function of word roots in order to complete this center.
Map Genius: Prep is required for this center. Each group (or each student) needs a copy of the map provided. Students will need access to an atlas, a set of encyclopedias, or an electronic source to be able to look up the official languages of specific countries.
Game Time: Prep is required for this center. For the PDF option, print smaller (task card size), and the corresponding clue/explorer cards should be attached back to back. In my class, these cards are laminated and kept together on a binder ring. For the PowerPoint option, the teacher needs to set up the PP in full screen mode on a computer for game play. Game materials are included in a separate file with this download.
