Write to Learn activities will give you a quick check of how well students have grasped the information they are studying. By taking on the roles of different people (tourist, tour guide, archeologist, writer, etc), students practice their writing abilities and expand their vocabulary knowledge.
Students are given a list of vocabulary words and a list of different perspectives that they could write from. It is the student’s goal to show their understanding of the civilization or time period by using the given vocabulary words.
When I use this in my classroom, I make sure to show lots of example of how to include words in my writing to show that I understand what that word means.
Weak example: The pharaoh lived in Egypt.
Strong example: The pharaoh ruled over Upper and Lower Egypt by making laws and defending Egypt against foreigners
