Are you using a superhero theme to teach social skills? Judging from the wealth of social superhero packets and programs available now, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who's fallen in love with this way of engaging my elementary kiddos!
Help students make their own 3x5” Social Superhero Squad identification cards. This high-interest activity helps them reflect on their own special strengths, identify their weaknesses, and monitor their social growth.
On the front you’ll insert a photo or drawing of the child, along with his or her name and one or two “super strengths.” The back shows the child’s “power rating” on a set of social superpowers. Discuss how strong his powers are in each area and highlight them. Glue front to back on a 3x5 index card, and your student will have his own official Social Superhero Squad identification card!
Cards come in color or black-and-white. Included are six Power Rating options in PDF form: 7 Habits, general behavior (e.g. Respect, Truthfulness), basic and more advanced social skills, academics, and Social Thinking (6 Unthinkables). Also included is an editable version of the cards---in both Word and Pages---so you can insert digital photos or change the power ratings to fit your students’ particular needs.
My summer school social superheroes loved getting these, and they led to some great discussions about my friends' strengths and weaknesses. We tried to keep in mind that even superheroes have their Kryptonite!
