The following is an activity (that is also used as a Summative Assessment) designed to reinforce the topic of Agents of Socialization and their impact on behavior. The is activity for Sociology class while covering the Socialization unit of study.
For this activity, students are asked to work in groups to design, create, and then perform a Public Service Announcement Commercial that informs the audience about the impacts on our behavior in which their assigned Agent of Socialization gives individuals during the process of Socialization.
Students can choose from any Agent of Socialization (I usually have them choose out of a cup from Family, Mass Media, Peers, and Education). Previous to the start, while teaching about the Agents of Socialization I usually show them a few PSA commericals from the 80's and 90's to give them examples and get them excited about this activity they are about to do. (They love the cheesy 80's PSA's). On the first day I allow them the full period to design and create the commercial and urge them to practice their commercial. On day 2, groups act out their commercials in front of class while I grade them using the grading rubric provided. To influence their creativity and energy, I offer extra credit to the top performances and have their peers vote using the ballots I created (which are included in this package).
I have used this activity for the past few semesters now, and students love this activity and really do get into their commercials. I have had some great commercials in the past years and students usually score well on their exam on the Agents of Socialization and their impact on behavior.
