This is an introduction to any high school sociology course by studying cults as a counter culture. This was used as a concluding unit where students were able to apply what they had learned from the entire year; students had already learned about social norms, and social deviance.
Why students loved this unit was because they were able to learn about cults by identifying features of a cult while watching the History Channel's Manson Family documentary. After, students then got to analyze a group of their choosing, and complete a project asking, "Is it a cult?" Students chose topics from underground rap groups, dance moms, to AP classes. There is also an option to learn about Jonestown if you choose!
