One of my favorite units in Sociology class is my unit on Socialization,.
I begin showing the youtube video of Genie, the Wild Child. Then I show some video of my children playing, to tie in the concept of learned behavior and why socialization is learned, necessary and vital.
I then progress with some of the activities I provide. A handout I use with the Peanuts characters show how Kindergarten is a necessary step in childhood, followed up by a great classroom activity. Students really love going back to this part of their lives.
I include an article about three girls in Ohio that were kept in Social Isolation--article comes with questions.
Shawshank is a great movie to teach concepts of social institutions and their goals. Rehabilitation and all the "buzz words" are integrated here. Students have a good time discussing prison and diving into this.
One of the most engaging lessons I provide here are for anticipatory socialization. Dating and college are great examples, so I provide classroom activities that promote imagination and facilitate learning.
I also include a quiz using my vocab and concepts. It's a word document that you can manipulate to suit your needs.
