One of the most riveting and rewarding classroom activities for both teachers and students is Socratic Seminar! A Socratic Seminar is a discussion centered on dialogue, not debate; my students absolutely love these types of discussions because they can think critically about a text and share those ideas in a safe, non-threatening environment. Socratic Seminar can be used with any text; however, it works best with challenging texts, as the students are forced to go back into the reading and figure it out together. This bundle includes everything you need to teach students how to prepare for, and facilitate, a successful Socratic Seminar discussion, from creating questions reflecting 3-levels of inquiry, to tips on furthering a discussion, to debriefing and self-reflecting.
Included in this bundle are the 12 following activities/handouts:
~ Introductory PPT on Socrates (editable)
~Dialogue vs. Debate brainstorming/discussion activity for students, to be completed
before first discussion
~Acronym poster to remind students the steps of the seminar
~ Lesson to teach students the 3 levels of inquiry; students use "The Gettysburg
Address" to practice writing questions
~Costa’s levels of questioning chart and sample verbs to help students develop questions
~Tip sheet for students to use during discussion; includes examples of follow-up questions and comments to give students ideas on what to say in addition to answering questions
